    Synopsis: Charles Le Brun is the painter of Versailles who, for thirty years, worked on the palace's decoration, conceived by Louis XIV. The magnificence of the architecture is matched by the great historical paintings extolling the glories of Louis XIV. Le Brun did not limit himself to identifying the King as a mythological figure, as had been the custom until then. He combined historical elements with other contemporary items, creating an effect of cinematographic reality. This publication exceptionally contains drafts and preparatory sketches for the paintings on the Ambassadors' Staircase and in the Hall of Mirrors.
