The past few decades has seen growth in the international support provided for health research in Africa. However, research institutions face particular problems in developing good practices in the area of management, organisation and planning, all essential to ensure this research is sustainable.

That's why, in order to enhance the quality of the management and coordination of the research carried out in Lusophone Africa (PALOP), the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and "la Caixa" Banking Foundation, with the support of the Centro de Investigação em Saúde da Manhiça-Moçambique and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), are launching the 2nd Course in Science Management.

The aim of this Science Management Course is to provide participants with specialised training in managing research projects and leadership skills specific to developing countries. This course covers a wide range of issues that are fundamental to reinforce the scientific capacity of African research institutions and to ensure successful international collaboration in global health research. Specifically, the goals are as follows:

    1. Develop leadership and management skills in science and technology, innovation and knowledge transfer, taking the current trends/situations of global health research into account.

    2. Develop strategic planning skills, focusing particularly on the nature of global funding.

    3. Analyse different models of organisational behaviour and promote responsibility, transparency and efficient communication among research partners.

    4. Identify internal challenges that may prevent the proposals being presented for subsidies and affect scientific production.

This course is aimed at researchers and/or managers of public and private research institutions in the area of health, in particular scientific directors, coordinators and programme managers in Lusophone Africa (PALOP).
