New antimicrobial strategies to combat cystic fibrosis. Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia - IBEC

Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive illness caused by a bacterial infection. It causes a multisystemic disorder that essentially affects the lungs, intestines, pancreas and liver.

All patients with cystic fibrosis suffer respiratory insufficiency, mainly because of chronic bacterial colonisation of the lungs in the form of biofilms. In many patients it is practically impossible to eradicate these chronic infections, as they do not respond to treatment with antibiotics.

The Bacterial Infections: Antimicrobial Therapies group at IBEC, led by Dr. Torrents Serra, works to combat what is considered to be the root of the problem of cystic fibrosis: the creation of biofilms that hinder the action of antibiotics, cause current treatments to fail and lead to the premature death of a significant number of patients.
