INPhINIT targets the most motivated PhD candidates by addressing the research areas in which Spain excels: Bio and Health Sciences, Technology, Physics, Engineering and Mathematics. These disciplines are directly related to the major societal challenges marked by the European Commission: health and ageing, food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, water research, secure energy, climate change, smart and green transport and environment. In order to give effective answers to these concerns, supporting young scientific talent has become essential to ensure the next generation of researchers.

The high-level research carried out in Spanish research labs, the international background and scientific excellence of their group leaders, a strong network of academic and industrial contacts as well as access to a wide assortment of scientific training activities and events, bring the opportunity to develop a top scientific career in Spain and boost the chances of obtaining an independent research position across the world.

Key data regarding the leading role of Spanish scientific research:

    • The top 30 research centres in Spain work in fields related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Bio or Health.

    • Spain experienced an exponential growth in science and technology parks (nearly 80), research centres and technology institutes. Its infrastructure also incorporates the latest technology for life science projects.

    • Spain has an extensive network of 800 hospitals, both public and private, backed by leading-edge research centres. The system is ideal for translational medicine and discovering new drugs and advanced therapies.

    • Spanish biotech companies are growing faster than companies in other countries and the pharma industry leads R+D spending in Spain.

The “la Caixa” Foundation collaborates with the Spanish research centres recognised as excellent in Bio and Health Sciences, Technology, Physics, Engineering and Mathematics. They may act as host organisations within the INPhINIT programme by offering prestigious PhD open positions in which INPhINIT researchers may develop their doctoral research project.

In order to participate in the programme, the host organisations need to fulfil the following additional requirements:

    • Official doctoral programme: the research training activities for recruited researchers have to lead to the award of a doctoral degree including mentoring schemes, supervision arrangements and support for researchers in place.

    • Endorsement of the European Charter & Code and the Principles for Innovative Doctoral Training.

    • Ethics protocols & Intellectual Property rights, abiding by the European Commission dispositions.

    • Complementary activities for researchers, in addition to the scientific training leading them to obtain a PhD, such as:

      • Secondment/mobility opportunities.

      • Appropriate large-scale research facilities.

      • Complementary training activities in soft skills and technical competencies.

      • Public engagement activities.

(*) The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness awards "Severo Ochoa" and "María de Maeztu" certificates to research centres and units of excellence respectively, in any field of science. They are the highest distinction at national level for entities that promote excellence in research. Similarly, the Ministry of Health awards "Carlos III" certificates to excellent research health institutes, both public and private. These certificates of excellence are granted by means of an annual competition to a small number of entities for a limited number of years, after which the entities must once again undergo a competitive selection process to renew them.

Every year thousands of students come to Spain from across the world to attend one of the many postgraduate programmes offered by Spanish universities and research centres. Spain is one of the world’s most popular destinations for international students: studying in Spain offers the opportunity to live a truly enriching experience due to its unique combination of an excellent education system and attractive lifestyle.

The Spanish university system joins the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). This makes Spain an attractive and accessible destination for international students seeking high-quality qualifications with international recognition.

In order to start a doctoral degree (PhD) in Spain, students have to be admitted and enrolled on a doctoral programme involving a research project.

During the doctorate, PhD students develop an individual research project, undertake training activities on complementary skills and attend seminars and conferences. The doctoral period ends with the preparation and defence of the doctoral thesis. Spanish doctoral programmes are designed to be accessible, with teaching and training in English, as well as support for students seeking to improve or acquire Spanish language skills.

Not only education but culture and lifestyle are strong motivations for a PhD candidate to choose Spain as their country to live next years: with a mild climate, delicious cuisine and a long history, Spain is the country with the third highest number of UNESCO-designated World Heritage sites: Roman ruins, mosques, gothic and Moorish palaces as well as amazing natural landscapes, coasts and beaches surrounded by high mountains or vineyards.
