ETHICS ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
The INPhINIT programme is co-funded by the European Commission through COFUND, which is one of the Marie Sk?odowska-Curie initiatives of the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. As with all activities funded by the European Union, ethics is given the highest priority and is seen as crucial to achieve real research excellence. The research carried out in the framework of the INPhINIT programme must comply with ethical principles and relevant national, EU and international legislation, such as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights.
INPhINIT follows a bottom-up approach, thus it is not known in advance if the fellowships to be funded raise ethical issues. It is for this reason that “la Caixa” Foundation establishes a procedure to identify any potential ethics issues and to handle the ethics aspects raised.
As part of this procedure, “la Caixa” Foundation requires to any fellowship recipient to complete a Checklist in order to identify any potential ethics issue related to the funded research projects.
Applications that may involve ethical issues are sent to the Ethics Committee to verify that the proposals do not contravene fundamental ethics principals or relevant security procedures.
RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is an emerging concept, promoted by the European Commission and incorporated in the Horizon 2020 programme, to reconsider the role of science and technology in society. “la Caixa” Foundation fosters this concept through the coordination of the EU project RRI Tools and its participation in other European projects aiming to implement RRI in diverse contexts: HEIRRI for higher education institutions and COMPASS for industry.
During their interdisciplinary training, INPhINIT fellows will have the opportunity to learn more about how to align their research with the values and needs of society, paying attention to issues such as integrity in research and understanding the benefits to their own professional engagement with the public and industry in their research activity.
