  • RESEARCH CENTRES

Fellows awarded with a doctoral INPhINIT Incoming fellowship must carry out their PhD project at Spanish centres accredited with the Spanish Seal of Excellence Severo Ochoa, María de Maeztu or Health Institute Carlos III and Portuguese units accredited as “excellent” or “exceptional” according to the evaluation of the Fundação de Ciência e Tecnologia. These centres and units stand out for their scientific impact and leadership at international level and they actively collaborate with their scientific and social environment.

The research programmes carried out at these centres are first rate, highly competitive and considered to be among the best in the world in their respective scientific areas. These centres act as host organisations within the INPhINIT Incoming frame and all of them have characteristics which are essential for the development and consolidation of a research career:

    • They have ethical protocols in accordance with the provisions of the European Commission.

    • They have research management offices—experts in advisory services for competitive application processes and in managing research projects.

    • They have knowledge transfer offices, to ensure dissemination and valuation of scientific and technological advances made.

    • They offer complementary activities for researchers, such as:

    1. Opportunities for research/mobility stays.

    2. Intersectoral and interdisciplinary activities through existing agreements with national and international research centres, companies and universities.

    3. Specific training on interpersonal skills and technical competencies.

    4. Public participation activities.

  • CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE

The Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness grants Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu certificates to research centres and units of excellence, respectively, in any field of science. It is the highest distinction at the national level for entities that promote excellence in research. These certificates of excellence are granted by means of an annual competition among a small number of entities for a limited number of years. Once this period has passed, the entities must go through a competitive selection process again to renew their certificates.

Most of the Portuguese scientific research is carried out in the R&D Units and associated laboratories, which finances and evaluates the FCT. There are currently 307 accredited R&D Units where close to 22,000 researchers work.

The research carried out in these institutions covers all scientific fields, from life sciences and health sciences to social and human sciences, as well as engineering, exact sciences, natural and environmental sciences. The institutions are evaluated regularly by the FCT.
