We take on the challenges of health in a globalised world

We collaborate in projects working towards a world in which where you are born does not determine your chances of living a healthy life.

Barcelona Institute for Global health (ISGlobal)

ISGlobal is the fruit of an innovative alliance between academic, government, and philanthropic institutions to contribute to the efforts undertaken by the international community to address the challenges in global health. ISGlobal provides a hub of excellence in research and healthcare originating in the work started by Hospital Clínic and Barcelona University, with more than 30 years' experience in the field of global health.

Since 2013 ISGlobal has worked in alliance with the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in promoting and developing epidemiological research into the environmental factors that affect human health in order to help prevent and control their harmful effects.

Since 2009 the "la Caixa" Foundation has supported the experimentation stage of the malaria vaccine in eight centres in Africa.

The "la Caixa" Foundation has joined global efforts to eradicate malaria via the "la Caixa" against Malaria programme, which aims to help free the most disadvantaged countries from the burden that this illness - considered to be the main poverty-related disease - represents for their development.

The "la Caixa" Against Malaria programme is committed to eliminating malaria via its structural participation in ISGlobal, in whose work the Malaria Elimination Initiative plays a central role.

  • Achievement: In September 2014, the "la Caixa" Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation launched a joint programme aimed at eliminating malaria in southern Mozambique (a country with more than 80% of the cases of this illness in the world) with a period of five years.
