Synopsis: The competitive spirit is inherent to human nature and frequent throughout ancient Greek society, perceived not merely as conflict or aggression but also as a positive emotion that could bring people together. The exhibition delves into this key feature of ancient Greek civilisation from a broad perspective that goes beyond competition in the sporting arena - with events such as the Olympic Games - and also looks at other fields such as politics, theatre, war and mythology.

Synopsis: Research into light at the end of the 19th century brought with it a new perception of colour. Artistic Modernism fell in love with blue and placed it at the heart of a universe of synaesthesia. For Modernist artists, blue expresses nostalgia for cosmic unity. This exhibition catalogue includes the main artists during the changeover from the 19th to the 20th century, including Hermen Anglada Camarasa, Joaquim Mir, Isidre Nonell, Pablo Picasso, Nicolau Raurich, Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquín Torres-García, as well as other notable figures of European art such as M.K. Ciurlionis, Emil Nolde and Maurice de Vlaminck. The works are divided into four main sections: sky blue, twilight blue, night blue, and a final section with a series of ideal visions associated with blue birds and blue flowers, symbols of the inapprehensible.

Synopsis: Max Beckmann is one of the most important German artists of the 20th century. His world connects with the theatre of Bertolt Brecht, with the music of Kurt Weil and with the drawings of George Grosz. Classified by Hitler as a "degenerate artist", his canvases, full of disjointed, grotesque figures, reflect the unease of an era doomed to the void. Between the two world wars, Berlin was the capital of pain.

Synopsis: First of the four publications that accompany an exhibition of works from the "la Caixa" Contemporary Art Collection at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. The Whitechapel Gallery has come together with "la Caixa" to showcase key pieces from the Collection, with each of the four "books" curated by a contemporary writer who will also contribute a completely new work of fiction based on their selection. Each exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue illustrated with the works exhibited and a new text. The first book has been written by award-winning Spanish novelist Enrique Vila-Matas, described by The New Yorker as "arguably Spain's most significant contemporary literary figure". His work is often described as metafiction, a form of writing frequently used to examine the relationship between art and life.

Synopsis: Charles Le Brun is the painter of Versailles who, for thirty years, worked on decorating the palace designed by Louis XIV. The magnificence of its architecture is equalled by great historical paintings that sing the glories of Louis XIV. Le Brun did not merely identify the king as a mythological figure, as had been the custom; he combined history with contemporary aspects and achieved a cinematographic effect of reality. This exceptional book contains the cartoons and preparatory sketches of the paintings for the Ambassadors' Staircase and Hall of Mirrors.
