Isidro Fainé was born in Manresa in 1942. He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fundación Bancaria Caixa d'Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona ”la Caixa” and Criteria Caixa, S.A.U.

    He holds a Doctorate in Economic Science from the University of Barcelona, an ISMP in Business Administration from the University of Harvard and a post-graduate degree in Senior Management from IESE. He has been a Member of the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Science “Real Academia de Ciencias Económicas y Financieras” since December 1992 and of the Royal European Academy of Doctors “Real Academia Europea de Doctores” since May 1997.

    He began his professional banking career as a Manager of Investment at Banco Atlántico in 1964 and later on, in 1969, he held the position of Managing Director of Banco de Asunción in Paraguay. Later, he returned to Barcelona to hold several positions in various financial institutions: Human Resources Manager at Banca Riva y García (1973), Member of the Board and Managing Director of Banca Jover (1974) and Managing Director of Banco Unión (1978). In 1982 he joined ”la Caixa” as Deputy-General Manager, holding various positions. In April 1991, he was appointed Assistant Executive Managing Director and in 1999, Managing Director of the entity and was the Chairman from June 2007 to June 2014.

    He was Chairman of CaixaBank, S.A. and a Member of its Board of Directors from 2011 until his resignation in 2016. He was President of Naturgy from September 2016 until February 2018, when he was appointed Honorary Chairman.

    From 2007 he presided over ”la Caixa” until its restructuring into the Fundación Bancaria Caixa d'Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, "la Caixa", as well as the "la Caixa" Foundation until its dissolution.

    Isidro Fainé is Vice-Chairman of Telefonica, Member of the Board of The Bank of East Asia, Suez and holds the Chairmanship of the Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks (CECA), the World Savings Banks Institute (WSBI) and the Vice-Chairmanship of the European Savings Banks Group (ESBG).

    Currently, he is also Chairman of the Spanish Confederation of Directors and Executives (CEDE), the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome and the Círculo Financiero, a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Prado Museum, Trustee of the Carlos Slim Foundation and has been acknowledged with the 2018 Forbes Philanthropy Award.
