• JAVIER SOLANA MADARIAGA

    Trustee

    Javier Solana was born in Madrid in 1942. He is Trustee of Fundación Bancaria Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona ”la Caixa”, since June 2014.

    He holds a Doctorate in Physics Science and he is professor from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid.

    He has been member of de Government of Spain for thirteen years, in which he held several ministerial positions including that of Culture, Education, and Foreign Affairs. In 1995 he was appointed Secretary General of NATO; and in 1999, he was appointed the first High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union. He returned to Spain in January 2010.

    Currently, he presides EsadeGeo- Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics of ESADE, the Royal Board of Trustees of the Museo del Prado “Real patronato del Museo del Prado”, Aspen Institute Spain, and the Executive Committee of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health “Instituto de Salud Global Barcelona (ISGlobal)”. He belongs to the Boards of Trustees of Fundación Bancaria ”la Caixa” and of Fundación Telefónica; as well as that of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the European Council on Foreign Relations, the Royal Institute Elcano, and the Drugs Global Committee. He is distinguished fellow at Brookings Institution (Washington, DC), and senior visiting professor at the London School of Economics, where he was awarded an Honorary Degree in December 2010.
